When I pass through the park and the building and see so many people enjoying the space and having fun, I can't help but feel great pride in this accomplishment that I had a role in bringing to reality.
The Robert Crown Community Center is a true "community" center in every sense of the word. The building and the park have long been the most heavily used City property. As the prior building deteriorated, a lengthy and extensive effort to develop a plan to replace the building was undertaken. In the end, a model was developed to take advantage of the willingness of Evanston residents and community partners to raise funds to help pay for the project. In addition to the fundraising, a model was chosen that incorporates the creation of a maintenance fund for the long term needs of the property.
This will help future generations avoid the hard choices of whether to maintain the property to pay for other needs.
The end result is a community asset that has a space for every Evanstonian.
